About BARRY
Since 2015, platform BARRY has been the organically evolving environment for long-term artistic research and personal work by actor and teaching artist in higher art education, Karel Tuytschaever.
As a maker, Karel is fascinated by physicality and embodiment in art. Physicality refers to the unique relationship people have with their own bodies, while embodiment is about the way a performer or maker uses their personal body in the creative process. Through his creative practice, Karel investigates how we (can) look at bodies in our networked, global contemporary visual culture full of body images.
Intimacy is at the heart of Karel's artistic practice, in which he strives for a more sincere and conscious physicality within the arts. Intimate connections do not occur quickly or in large numbers. That is why his artistry is based on reciprocal, trust-building encounters with the people he connects with.
His projects move between performative and visual art. He searches for new relationships between the two through different media, always taking the human body as his starting point.
